Fall Activities

Go Find Your Gold

Fall might be the best time to play in the South Kootenay. Hit the trails for big views and bursts of gold, orange and red, explore quiet mountain roads and lakes, or ride when the weather is crisp and the dirt is dialled. In Rossland, Trail and the surrounding towns, the changing colours make an already good-looking region seriously photogenic. And with perfect weather for hiking, biking, golfing, fishing and getting outside, there’s no shortage of ways to make the most of it. Finish the day with a visit to the local shops, breweries or get that last bit of sunshine on a patio, with a great meal or a coffee that turns into an afternoon with your favourite people.

Chase the colours in the peaks or on the streets

Biking

Fall dirt hits different. Cooler temps, tacky trails and a whole lot of colour make this prime time to ride the South Kootenay trail network. In Rossland, head up high for big mountain views framed in gold and orange, or drop down to the Bluffs in Trail, where warmer temperatures keep the riding going long after the alpine starts to cool off. Die-hard riders can squeeze every last lap out of the season, while a fresh dusting of snow up high might even mean a ski-and-bike doubleheader in one day. It’s also the perfect time to get your bike tuned up at a local shop and start getting your gear ready for winter. Golden views, primo dirt and one more lap? Sounds like the fall getaway.

Fishing

Cooler days, crisp air and fish getting ready for winter — fall is a fine time to wet a line in the South Kootenay. As lake temperatures drop, trout can ramp up their feeding, making autumn a rewarding season to get out on the water. Cast from shore, troll a favourite lake or find a quiet stretch of river, with golden hillsides and fiery foliage adding a pretty great backdrop to the day. From the Columbia River to the region’s lakes, there are plenty of places to chase your next catch — just remember that seasonal closures and regulations vary by water and species. Pack a warm layer, bring your tackle and enjoy one of the best excuses to spend a crisp fall day outside.

Hiking & Trail Running

Golden larches, crisp air and big mountain views — fall is made for getting out on foot. Lace up your hiking boots or hit the trails at a faster pace and explore everything from forest loops to alpine ridgelines, with the changing colours putting on a show at every turn. Climb to one of many lookouts in the area including Mt Roberts in Rossland, Antenna Trail in Montrose, or the Bluffs in Trail. Cooler temperatures make it easier to go the distance, whether you’re chasing the summit to Old Glory or squeezing in a quick trail run before lunch. Just remember, mountain weather can change fast, and early snow may arrive at higher elevations, so check trail conditions before heading out.

Fall Road Trips

Take the long way home. Fall turns a South Kootenay road trip into a front-row seat to golden hillsides, colourful small mountain towns and views around every bend. Cruise the backroads, explore the winding routes between Rossland, Trail, Warfield, Montrose and Fruitvale, or bring your mountain bike and discover why the Kootenays are made for getting off the beaten path. Each community has its own character, from Rossland’s mountain-town energy to Trail’s riverside history and the quieter charms of the Beaver Valley. Stop for a coffee, browse local shops, grab a bite or stretch your legs on a scenic trail. No need to rush through on your way somewhere else — there’s plenty to explore right here in the South Kootenay.
