At six years old Brian Fry vowed to be an Olympic ski racer, but at 19 a badly broken leg ended that career. Channelling that competitive determination and risk-taking attitude with a fascination for computer technology took him into the wide world of the Internet. Today Fry and partner, Tim Dufour, run a global company hosting over a thousand Internet servers. At any moment of time, about half a million communication sessions are happening through Rack Force's three data centres, located in Kelowna because of broadband access there. Elaborate layers of protection and backup ensure the highest level of reliability against loss of power and attacks by hackers, worms and viruses in a world where just minutes of downtime is a crisis.
Fry has run other companies and even worked in the fabled Silicon Valley, but in 1997 he returned to his roots here in Rossland. "I run my business from my home; anyone can," he said. "Head-hunters were telling me I wouldn't last here. That made me more determined, and I am happy I don't need to move to a large centre."
Rack Force www.rackforce.com is now growing rapidly - five percent a month customer growth, 65% in the U.S. and 30% in Europe and Asia. "There is so much opportunity in the future of communication technology to improve people's lives and create more opportunity," Fry said. "Being entrepreneurial is risky, but anyone who believes a nine to five job isn't risky these days is deluded. It's less risky to create a situation where you can generate your own income whenever you need it. Risk is an illusion."
