South African Jan Visser has a PhD in computational fluid dynamics, and he has transformed his research specialty into a global business with offices in Pretoria and Rossland. He came to Canada in 2002, his immigration eased by his wife securing a radiologist position at KBRH in Trail.
Qfinsoft’s primary product is simulation software that models heat flow in cooling systems in electronic hardware like computers, cell phones and the myriad other gadgetry we take for granted. Electronic processors generate heat, and with the trend towards cramming more power into less space, getting rid of that heat is a big challenge for electronics designers. Qfinsoft’s software maximizes cooling efficiency and so boosts performance. The company is small – three people in Rossland and five in Pretoria – but their product is unique and they service an expanding, worldwide niche market with clients in Japan, Korea, Singapore, the USA and Europe.
Why Rossland? Its easy access to the U.S., my wife’s career at the hospital, and it’s a nice place to live, said Visser; but we could go anywhere and locating here hasn’t been easy. If people here really want new business, the organization and planning has to be here to support that. Qfinsoft built their own office building that now houses six other professional businesses.
“Our Pretoria office is much more into engineering consulting, and we’d like to do more of that here,” says Visser, “We have really talented people and great modeling resources in anything to do with the flow of fluids, heat transfer, energy and thermodynamics. We could model and optimize Rossland’s sewer and water systems for example.”
