Our Communities

The South Kootenay region consists of five communities, each with its' own unique 'personality', history, micro-climate and demographics. The communities share common traits such as the friendly, safe and relaxed atmosphere that encompassess you from the first time you visit the region.

Friendly

It's the subtle differences that set one community apart from its neighbours. Realtors have been known to greet newcomers to the area with a food hamper, locals will jump into the car with you to direct you to a hard-to-find location. Meet another parent in the park and they’ll give you their number and invite you for coffee to make you feel welcome.

Safe

Young children still walk with their friends to school unaccompanied; there's no need to double bolt doors and bar windows and there is no congested traffic. Get into life here and you will know someone everywhere you go, or, if you choose, within minutes you can feel like you’re the only person around for miles and miles.

Modern

The region boasts well equipped and modern recreation centres, sporting clubs, artist communities, the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital, Selkirk College, highly qualified health professionals and many, many community groups. Meander between the towns and you will find boutique wineries, farms of all kinds, artisans galleries and workshops, antique shops and maybe the odd bear or deer.
