Gerick Cycle and Sports: Entrepreneur extraordinaire

Gerald Klassen was 22 and his brother Rick was just 19 when they opened their Trail bike store in 1983. Twenty-two years later there are four ‘Gerick’ stores in the Kootenays: - Cranbrook, Kelowna, Nelson and Trail. Gerald’s brothers own the Cranbrook and Kelowna stores, and the Nelson store was sold, retaining the Gerick name. Under Gerald’s ownership the Trail store has grown ten-fold into a full sporting goods operation with a region-wide reputation. Gerick’s has a reputation for quality products and excellent after-sale service.

The business reflects Gerald’s passion for the sports he services. Cycling, cross-country skiing, hockey, running and triathlon, in fact most major sports activities. He knows the business because he lives it. “I cycle all summer and cross-country ski all winter, and I coach hockey. I love it all. I wouldn’t be doing this today if I didn’t love what I sell,” he said.

But it is also hard work and long hours, constantly monitoring the competition and reviewing the market for new products suited to his niche. The box stores are a challenge but ultimately, he believes, good for business. “People appreciate quality and excellent service. We’re the experts; I know how good that bike is or how much fun they’re going to have with that equipment, and I know it inside out.”

Gerick’s is a huge sponsor of sporting events throughout the region; it’s part of the balance in cultivating a customer base. “I love success, whether it’s finishing a tough ride or running a successful business. Giving it 110 percent is what it’s about.”
