Fishing

Fishing in the South Kootenay is a year round sport! Glacial streams feed hundreds of lakes dotted throughout the Selkirk, Purcell and Monashee mountain ranges. Flyfishermen are greeted to spectacular scenery with abundant Canadian wildlife and fresh mountain air.

Anglers can fish for the legendary Gerrard Rainbow Trout, Bull Trout and Dolly Varden. These giant Rainbows can grow to over 30lbs. Imagine hooking into the largest rainbow trout in the world; -the legendary Gerrard. A 52 pound Gerrard caught in Jewel lake is the South Kootenay record holder. Other popular sportfish in the area include Kokanee and the Yellow Fin Trout.

Two lakes in the Selkirk Mountains are the birthplace of the mighty Columbia river. The Columbia originates in British Columbia and traverses 7 US states on its journey to the Pacific Ocean. Both Green Sturgeon and White Sturgeon can be found in the Columbia. White Sturgeon may live for 100+ years and grow to lengths in excess of 18 feet! The city of Trail has 2 bridges traversing the Columbia river and there are many professional guides and outfitters available.
