The discovery loop is a pleasant drive that takes you through the communities of the South Kootenay and beyond. Beginning in the Silver City of Trail wind your way through Montrose, Beaver Valley & Fruitvale towards Salmo. Excellent swimming, golfing and camping are available at Champion Lakes Provincial park between Fruitvale and Salmo. Salmo is also the home of the Salmo Ski Resort; -a great family mountain with night skiing.
Continue on through Ymir to Nelson -a beautiful city with Victorian charm, carefully preserved heritage buildings and great eating and shopping. Nelson is situated on Kootenay Lake 1 hours drive from Trail and is a wonderful town to check out. Ainsworth Hot Springs are another 40 minutes outside of Nelson and should not be missed. From Nelson continue on to Castlegar and be sure to take a look at the unique Doukhobor Museum.
As you finish the loop you will travel past Nancy Greene Lake Provincial park, Red Mountain Ski Resort , the historic Le Roi Mine and into the Alpine City of Rossland. Here you can take yourself on a well laid out 'Heritage Tour" of the area. Stop at the Chamber of Commerce for your 'Passport" describing the local buildings and their history and location. Wind your way down the mountain, through Warfield and back into into Trail and you will have completed the Dicovery Loop.
