Dining

Small communities with diverse cultures make for an interesting array of fine restaurants and cafes. You won't see too many fast food chains, but you will find excellent meals in affordable restaurants. Every town in the South Kootenay boasts about its own 'best Chinese restaurant' and favorite pub.

Rossland has a really great selection of restaurants from Chinese to pizza to more upmarket contemporary at Idgies and the  Gypsy at Red. There is no shortage of excellent coffee shops either. Check out the Alpine Grind for great food and 'extra-special' coffees. The experience is made even better by the continually changing local art displayed on the bright walls. The Goldrush doubles as a bookstore, and Clanseys is the local meeting place. The newest cafe in Rossland is the Rossland Coffee and Tea Company; -the South Kootenays only coffee roaster (click to smell the coffee). The cafe is located in the picturesque Rossland firehall. For a great early morning breakfast the Sunshine Cafe is a favorite of locals and visitors alike.

In Trail make sure you stop in at Clive's Coffee Bar to take advantage of their riverfront seating. Rebelatos' Morning Perk offers coffee, light snacks and much more. The Colander Restaurant has been a Trail tradition for many years and remains one of our most popular Italian restaurants. The Peppercorn Restaurant has excellent steak and seafood in a relaxed atmosphere. The Double Happiness Inn is the place to go when you gotta have Chinese Cuisine, and the Trail’s End Café is a popular choice with a wide variety of soups, wraps and dinner menu items.

Most restaurants have a story and are owned and run by locals. Service is usually fast, the food's good and they are affordable. There are so many choices to tingle your taste buds that we highly recommend asking the nearest local: "who makes the best (insert food here) in town?" For those that must have a fast food fix, Trail has two McDonalds, a Dairy Queen, Dixie Lee, Panago Pizza, Tim Hortons, two Subways and various other quick eats. Rossland has a Subway restaurant.
