Canadian Immigration (CIC)

The following immigration pathways apply to the federal immigration through Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC). Generally these federal pathways have broader requirements than the provincial PNP pathways as they are not optimized for any single province. As a result, these broader requirements often mean the federal immigration pathway will take longer.

  • As of September 1, 2006 a new simplified application process for most federal skilled workers and business class immigrants was introduced. The new system guarantees your place in the processing queue. Ensure you are aware of these changes before continuing!
  • Skilled Workers have professional skills that are needed in the Canadian job market. Canada works on a point system and awards points based on education, experience and language skills.
  • Entrepreneurs must have a minimum net worth of $300,000 in Canadian funds and intend to purchase and operate a business in Canada. The entrepreneur immigrant must own more than 1/3 of the business venture and create at least one full-time job for a Canadian Citizen.
  • Investors with business experience must have a minimum net worth of $800,000 in Canadian funds and intend to invest $400,000 through the Receiver General of Canada. The investment will be used for economic development and will be reimbursed in five years.
  • Self-Employed immigrants are generally world-class athletes or artists who will make a significant contribution to the cultural and athletic activities of Canada. This class also includes immigrants with specialized farm management skills who will purchase and manage a farm.
  • Family Class is for potential immigrants who have a close family member already living in Canada.
  • Refugees and persons needing protection are people in or outside Canada who fear returning to their country of nationality or habitual residence. In keeping with its humanitarian tradition and international obligations, Canada provides protection to thousands of people every year.
