Arts & Culture

Helen at work.

Arts & culture thrive in the South Kootenay. On a regular basis you will be able to catch a live show in various towns in and around the region presented by the local talent. Enjoy live music in the park in the summer and sample many world-class entertainers during the many street festivals.

The South Kootenay is home to some of Canada's most acclaimed artisans, and many of them can be visited in their hometown galleries and studios. Selkirk College provides the area with professional art instructors in all forms of art, craft, and music. The local townships also offer various workshops and night classes from a host of special interest groups.

The South Kootenay region with its' majestic mountains, alpine meadows and many lakes, rivers and streams are an inspiring place for any artful mind. Known mostly for its strong industry, recreational activities, and sport champions, visitors are often surprised and delighted to discover the significant artistic and cultural aspects of the South Kootenay.

Performing Arts

The performing art series at the community centre brings several top performers into the region every year. From broadway productions and symphonies to popular musicians and cultural performances, there is something to suit everybody's artistic tastes! The free spirited Boom Town Garter Girls are a Rossland tradition that dates back to the days of gold mines and boom towns. Another not to be missed venue is the internationally recognized  Rossland Light Opera Players. Founded in 1951, the Rossland Light Opera is believed to be the oldest amateur musical theatre group in British Columbia!

Visual Arts

An avid supporter of the art community, the  VISAC Community Art Gallery is located in Trail and holds local and touring exhibitions. The gallery also works in cooperation with Community Education in conducting workshops in the Visual Arts.

Our local regional gallery is the  Kootenay Gallery of Art, History and Science. Local art clubs include the Trail Art Club, the Rossland Art Club and the Greater Trail Potter's Guild.

Artisan Studios

Tour the private studios of some of Canada's best artists, meet one of the Kootenay's Master Weavers, marvel at the craftsmanship of some of the regions best woodcrafters, and be inspired by the exquisite works of local artists.

Literary Arts

The tranquility of the Kootenays has been an inspiration to many writers. Published works by many of the regions literary artists are a proud testament to the thriving art community in the South Kootenay.
